Blissymbolics - A Living language

This twenty-minute videotape presents the main reasons for the use of Blissymbolics as an augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) system. The emphasis is based upon its language capabilities which afford the learner a means of representing grammar concepts as well as vocabulary items.
Some of the special features of Blissymbolics such as its indicators and the capacity it provides for generating new symbols are demonstrated. The manner in which it is taught is shown by teachers in Bliss classrooms in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. Examples are given of technologies which apply to Blissymbols as the graphic representational system for communicating and for literacy learning.

With the large number of symbol options now available to augmentative communicators, the videotape provides the basic information about Blissymbols that should be part of every AAC specialist's knowledge base. Blissymbols provide a unique language capability that should be carefully considered within the symbol selection process for each individual.

Blissymbolics - A Living Language seeks to support responsible recommendations by professionals and informed decision-making by AAC users.
