Man and Woman

manwoman

These two Bliss-words, like many others, can be explained in more than one way.

Mr. Bliss explains them:

man

  1. combination of person and action: CKB says that man embodies the action principle in society.
  2. The symbol also looks like a stick figure of a man wearing trousers.
woman
  1. combination of person and creation (half-sized): CKB says woman embodies the creative principle in society.
  2. The symbol also looks like a stick figure of a woman wearing a skirt.

Another interpretation has been suggested during workshops:
While the man may be the person who, up to the present time, has tended to appear to be where the action is in society, it is the woman who always demonstrates action with her feet firmly positioned on the ground (interpreting the horizontal line as earth line rather than hemline!).

The above explanations are offered to demonstrate the different developmental levels that need to be taken into account in explaining a Bliss-word, and also, that one can have fun with one’s explanations! The explanation needs to be memorable through being understood. This is the key consideration when teaching persons with complex communication needs.
